Economic abuse
Economic abuse is a legally recognised form of domestic abuse.
It is a deeply concerning issue that revolves around the deliberate manipulation and control of somebody else’s finances and assets. This type of abuse is difficult to detect as it is discreet, but it is often combined with physical and emotional abuse, ultimately forming coercive control.
Perpetrators of economic abuse within relationships exert their control by manipulating or limiting the financial circumstances of their partner or spouse. For example, by sabotaging the victim’s income or ability to work, or excluding them from financial decisions and controlling their access to money.
This harmful behaviour has a deep impact on victims, as it limits their freedom and forces them to depend on their abusive partner. Consequently, it becomes increasingly challenging for them to break free from the relationship.
However, it is crucial for victims to be aware that although seeking support seems like a daunting task, there are dedicated support services available who can assist in uncovering the extent of abuse and freeing victims from its control.
